IPA er katalogets mest forgrenede kategori: 28 varianter, fra session-IPA på 4 % til triple IPA over 10 %. Fællesnævneren er humlen, der bærer både duften og bitterheden, mens malten holder sig i baggrunden. Anchor Liberty Ale fra 1975 regnes som den moderne amerikanske stils udgangspunkt, men den første øl, der faktisk blev solgt under navnet IPA, var Bert Grant's fra 1983. Den uklare, frugtsøde New England-IPA kom til i 2010'erne.
